Vinnytsia students learn programming using Harvard’s course

Harvard CS50 course on basics of programming has been added to the curricula for students of the Department of Computer Science of Vinnytsia National Technical University. It became possible thanks to an initiative of Eugene Shemet – Education Lead of the BrainBasket Foundation and part-time lecturer of the university.

More than 70 students are already studying the basics of programming from the world’s top university, starting from September 2018. CS50 (Computer Science 50) is an on-campus and online introductory course on computer science from Harvard and, as of 2015, Yale Universities.

«In Vinnytsia I teach this course as part of the «Algorithmization and the basics of programming» discipline. Students are interested in learning and already have successfully completed the first practical tasks. A series of video lessons are in English, but we translated the practical part of the course. In addition, there are 6 foreign students from Angola, Yemen, Israel and Namibia among the students of the course», shared Eugene Shemet.

This course can be implemented in the curricula of other universities in Ukraine, as there are all the necessary conditions.

«First the course was taught as an elective one for students and good results had been achieved, so we decided to implement this course in the university curricula. Due to the fact that the course was approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and supported by the university, there were no problems with its implementation. An agreement on cooperation between BrainBasket and Vinnytsia National Technical University had been signed without difficulties. I would like to express my gratitude to Andriy Anatolyevych Yarovyi, head of the Department of Computer Science, for him supporting the initiative», said lecturer.

Thanks to the cooperation between BrainBasket with Harvard University, students who successfully pass final exam are eligible for an original certificate. In addition, the Foundation plans to translate a new version of the course into Ukrainian.
